見る

桜の写真を本格的に撮り始めて今年で20年が過ぎました。私は桜に対し、純粋な「自然」の美よりも、人とともにある存在、人の手が加わった結果としての美を強く感じています。それは自然と人間性が交錯する日本特有の現象であり、日本人の美意識が投影された「文化的装置」でもあります。

こうした渾然一体となった存在が私にとっての桜であり、それが最も現れやすい薄暮の時間帯を選んで撮影しています。一見すると絵画のように見えますが、一歩近づくと、現代のデジタルカメラがもたらすディティールに驚かされるはずです。

This year marks twenty years since I began photographing cherry blossoms in earnest.
Rather than perceiving cherry blossoms as purely “natural” beauty, I strongly sense in them a beauty that exists alongside people — a beauty born from the human hand. This is a uniquely Japanese phenomenon where nature and humanity intersect, and it is also a “cultural device” onto which Japanese aesthetic sensibilities are projected.
This fusion of elements, merged into an inseparable whole, is what cherry blossoms mean to me, and I choose to photograph them during twilight, when this quality is most likely to emerge.
At first glance, the images may appear to be paintings — but step a little closer, and you will be surprised by the fine detail that modern digital cameras can capture.
