PFAS Removal System Overview

This PFAS*1 removal system utilizes ceramic technologies developed by Noritake over many years.

By combining a fine-bubble*2 generator with a ceramic filter, the system can remove a wide range of PFAS, from short-chain to long-chain compounds, and can treat wastewater with high PFAS concentrations as well as wastewater containing substances other than PFAS.

PFAS can also be concentrated and recovered without using adsorbents such as activated carbon.

Field testing using actual wastewater is currently in progress.

*1 PFAS: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a collective term for chemical substances composed mainly of carbon and fluorine.

*2 Fine bubbles: Bubbles with a diameter of less than 100 μm. “Fine Bubble” is a registered trademark of the Fine Bubble Industries Association.

Principle

When fine bubbles are generated in PFAS-containing wastewater, PFAS compounds adsorb onto the surfaces of the bubbles.

The PFAS-laden fine bubbles are then separated and recovered using a ceramic filter, thereby removing PFAS from the wastewater.

The recovered PFAS can also be concentrated within the system, reducing the volume of liquid requiring treatment and disposal.

Overview of PFAS Removal Mechanism

Features

■ PFAS Removal Rate of 99% or Higher
PFAS Removal Performance

Achieves PFAS removal rates of 99% or higher for compounds including PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS.*3

The system can also remove a wide range of PFAS, from short-chain PFAS (4–6 carbon atoms, including HFPO-DA*4), which are generally considered difficult to remove, to long-chain PFAS.

*3  PFOS: Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid

     PFOA: Perfluorooctanoic acid

     PFHxS: Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid

*4 HFPO-DA: Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid

■ Suitable for High-Concentration and Complex Wastewater

The system can treat wastewater with PFAS concentrations of several hundred μg/L or higher, as well as wastewater containing substances other than PFAS.

■ No Adsorbents Required

The system can treat wastewater with PFAS concentrations of several hundred μg/L or higher, as well as wastewater containing substances other than PFAS.

■ Reduced Waste and CO₂ Emissions

PFAS can be concentrated and recovered within the system, reducing the volume of liquid requiring treatment and disposal.

In addition, eliminating the use of activated carbon helps reduce waste generation and CO₂ emissions from incineration.

■ Reusable Ceramic Components

The fine-bubble generator and ceramic filter can be cleaned and regenerated for repeated use.

Typical Applications
